Be Here Now

Whats the Story Morning Glory Review
With the success of both “Definitely Maybe” & “(What’s The Story?) Morning Glory”. Be Here now was the most eagerly anticipated album of both 1997 & probably the 90’s.

It was to no-one’s surprise that it went straight in at No.1 in the UK album charts.

It came as a bit of a disappointment when everyone got it home, unwrapped the cellophane and pressed play on the CD player. To be confronted by a mediocre album with songs far too long for their own liking, to bloated and frustratingly boring. This was the impression I got when I first heard the album. However don’t let this put you off. Because on second listening there are some real gem’s.

Most of the lyrics do sound like the ravings of a smack head but at the time, that’s what Oasis, were on!  As I said earlier there are some real gem’s on this album that most people would be proud to write. One song in particular “Don’t Go Away”, a soulful heart felt love song, which rivals anything Noel has written in the past.  With lyrics like “A Cold and frosty morning there's not a lot to say About the things caught in my mind”  “Damn my education I can’t find the words to say” a reminder that Noel, although still very much a drug addict, was growing as a songwriter.  “Stand By Me” is another song any one would be proud of to put on an album, a song although about troubled times, is still very positive.

“Be here now” is an album which critics slated when it first came out. Stating it was too bloated, far too many guitar riffs, and no bass. But in fairness there are some real gems on this album, most are songs that never got released. Some classic heart felt songs, some rocking non-sense – but wasn’t this why we loved Oasis right from “Definitely maybe”? To me this is still a fantastic album, worthy of being in anyone’s collection!
